How to Create an Insect Image With a Scanner

  1. Collect insect(s).
  2. Put in freezer for 15 to 30 minutes to immobilize insect. If you plan to release insect after photographing, try chilling the insect in the freezer for just a few minutes.
  3. Place insect(s) on surface of scanner.
  4. Cover scanner surface with white box (or another uniform color that contrasts with the insect's colors) to prevent crushing insect.
  5. Frame area where insects are to avoid creating an excessively large image file.
  6. Ideally, include multiple specimens to show different views or orientations.
  7. Adjust scanner settings, scan insects, save file in BMP format.
  8. For insects more than 3 mm in length use resolution of 200 dots per inch (DPI) or greater. For smaller insects use even higher resolutions.
  9. Upload insect image to www.insectprofessor.com.
