- Put in freezer for 15 to 30 minutes to immobilize insect. If you plan
to release insect after photographing, try chilling the insect in the freezer
for just a few minutes.
- Place insect(s) on surface of scanner.
- Cover scanner surface with white box (or another uniform color that contrasts
with the insect's colors) to prevent crushing insect.
- Frame area where insects are to avoid creating an excessively large
image file.
- Ideally, include multiple specimens to show different views or
orientations.
- Adjust scanner settings, scan insects, save file in BMP format.
- For insects more than 3 mm in length use resolution of 200 dots per
inch (DPI) or greater. For smaller insects use even higher resolutions.
